Poland's unemployment rate fell to 8.9% in September from the revised 9.1% figure recorded in August, according to Central Statistical Office (GUS) figures released Tuesday. Registered unemployment rolls came to 1.377 in September, down 27.8k or 2.0% from the prior month and down 401.2k year on year.
240k individuals registered at labor offices in September, up 47.7k from August and up 13.0k from September 2007. Some 75% were re-registering. Only 1.5% of new registrants arrived following a lay-off. Of the 267.8k people written off the rolls in October, 104.1k left to take jobs offered via the job office.
Employers announced 105.3k job openings, versus 98.8k in August and 106.4k in September 2007. GUS reports show 236 employers planning lay-offs of 15.6k workers in the coming period (up from 5.8k workers at 133 employers one year ago).
The Labor Ministry had expected September unemployment rate to decline to 9.1%. (Warsaw Voice Newspaper)
