Tirana is the biggest city in the country, it was founded in 1614 and declared the capital city in 1920. Apart from being the centre of industrial and cultural activities, a growth process of the tourism industry is taking place nowadays. It is remarkable the fast growth that the construction of new housings is experiencing.

Edi Rama, the current mayor of Tirana has managed to make the city a safe and lively place. In this way the night life of Blocu district, a former luxury Stalinist neighborhood to which, in the Communist period, only government employees had access, is quite similar to any south Italian town.

Dominating the city is Skanderbeg Square, dedicated to the hero of Albanian independency, together with the National History Museum. In addition to this, museums such as the Natural Science Museum, the old Enver Hoxha Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Art Gallery. In Tirana you will also find the Palace of Culture, the National Library, the Clock Tower, the Congress Centre, the Graveyard of Martyres, the Old House of Enver Hoxha, the Quemal Stafa Stadium, the Old Palace of King Zog, the Orthodox Church, the Theatre, the Roman Circus, the Mosque of Ethem Bey, the Parliament and the University of Tirana.
